Mindfulness made simple – an easy one minute practice

Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and engaged in the current moment. Being fully present means immersing yourself in what’s happening right here and now, without being caught up in judgements or emotions, or your thoughts about the past or future. Being mindful means noticing what’s going on around you…or being aware of your thoughts and feelings…or noticing sensations inside your body. It’s like being a detached observer.

Mindfulness can reduce stress, enhance emotion regulation, improve attention and focus, and improve overall well-being. Incorporating mindfulness practices into your daily routine can be as simple as focusing on your breath, savouring a meal, or taking a mindful walk.

Here’s a simple one minute exercise to start building your mindful muscle. Simply focus on the video below and notice when you become distracted by your thoughts, notice the things your mind is saying, and gently bring your attention back to the video over and over…and that’s it. You’ve just spent a mindful minute of self care for your mind.
